Five Swords – Self-Defense Technique in American Kenpo Karate
Five Swords is a classic technique from the orange belt level in American Kenpo Karate. It appears in Form 4, executed on both sides, and has an advanced extension for higher ranks. Known for its fluidity and precision, this technique is fast, effective, and easy to learn.
What Is the Five Swords Technique?
This self-defense technique is designed to counter a right punch using a series of rapid, targeted strikes to key points: the neck, eyes, solar plexus, jaw, and the back of the neck. It combines offense, redirection, and finishing power.
Step-by-Step Breakdown

-
Start from a natural stance.
-
Step forward and slightly to the left (11 o’clock) with your right foot into a right neutral bow.
-
Execute a right inward strike to the inside of the opponent’s right punch.
-
Use your left hand to check the opponent’s arm.
2. Outward Chop to the Neck
-
Follow up with a right outward chop to the opponent’s right neck.
3. Eye Thrust and Forward Bow
-
Pivot into a right forward bow.
-
Thrust your left fingers (palm down) toward the opponent’s eyes.
-
Simultaneously, cock your right hand to your hip.
4. Uppercut to Solar Plexus
-
With your left hand guarding palm-down, deliver a right uppercut to the solar plexus.
-
Return to a right neutral bow.
5. Heel Palm and Finishing Strike
-
Slide your left foot counterclockwise (to 4 o’clock) into a right forward bow.
-
Strike with your left heel palm to the opponent’s left jaw (outward motion).
-
Shift into a right neutral bow, hook the opponent’s head with your left hand.
-
Finish with a right downward hand sword to the back of the neck.
Training Tips

Focus on speed and smooth transitions between strikes.

Each movement has purpose: attack or control—no wasted motion.
