Welcome to 313 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, Detroit’s first and only official Marcelo Garcia Jiu-Jitsu Academy Association. Founded in 2015 by seasoned practitioners Fabio Lima and Zander Heinen, our mission is to provide a safe, supportive environment where anyone can learn effective self-defense through the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). After years of training under world-renowned instructor Marcelo Garcia in New York City, Fabio and Zander brought their experience and passion back home to build a strong martial arts community in Downtown Detroit.

About the Style – Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ):
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system focused on grappling and ground fighting. It evolved from the Japanese art of Kodokan Judo, incorporating techniques taught by masters such as Mitsuyo Maeda and refined by Brazilian pioneers like Carlos and Hélio Gracie.

BJJ emphasizes the use of leverage, timing, and technique to control and submit larger opponents. Students learn how to use joint locks, chokeholds, and positional control to gain an advantage in self-defense situations or sport competition.
