Kokushi Budo New York

Kokushi Budo New York – The Oldest Judo School in NYC, Tradition Meets Excellence

Introduction
Welcome to Kokushi Budo New York, one of the oldest and most respected martial arts schools in New York City. Established in 1963, Kokushi Budo has become a cornerstone of traditional Japanese martial arts education, offering world-class instruction in Judo, Jiujitsu, Aikido, and Karate. Our mission is to preserve the art, philosophy, and discipline of traditional martial arts while helping students of all ages achieve strength, confidence, and personal growth.

Our lineage traces directly back to Jigoro Kano Sensei, the founder of Judo, and our commitment to his teachings remains strong. Whether you’re a beginner seeking fitness and self-defense, or a competitor aiming for national or international titles, Kokushi Budo offers the right program for you.

About the Style – Judo, “The Gentle Way”
Judo, created by Jigoro Kano in 1882, translates to “the gentle way.” It emphasizes using an opponent’s energy and momentum to control or subdue them, rather than relying on brute strength. The art combines balance, timing, and leverage, teaching practitioners how to perform dynamic throws, sweeps, and trips before transitioning to holds, joint locks, and chokes.

Judo’s philosophy extends beyond physical combat—it’s also a system of personal development, promoting humility, discipline, and respect. It’s no surprise that Judo became an Olympic sport in 1964, valued for both its athletic excellence and philosophical depth.

Programs and Classes Offered

Adult Judo Classes (All Levels)
From beginners to advanced competitors, our adult Judo program offers comprehensive training that fits every goal—fitness, self-defense, or competition. Students can expect to learn core techniques, improve conditioning, and gain confidence in a supportive, structured environment. Many of our students have gone on to become national champions, world team members, and Olympians.

Youth and Kids Judo Classes
Our children’s classes focus on coordination, respect, and teamwork. Kids learn discipline and self-control while developing agility, balance, and strength through fun and engaging drills. We provide a nurturing atmosphere where young practitioners can thrive both on and off the mat.

Traditional Martial Arts Training
In addition to Judo, Kokushi Budo also offers training in Jiujitsu, Aikido, and Karate—each rooted in traditional Japanese principles of self-improvement, discipline, and respect. These arts complement each other, allowing students to develop a complete understanding of martial movement and philosophy.
